Style: Fruited Sour
ABV: 4.7%
For this new release Friday we’re back in Winterville and hitting up Nauti Dog Brewing Co. We wanted to come out and try their new fruited sour “Pink Lady.” The beautiful weather of this warm March Friday night beckoned us to do a review right in the taproom of the brewery. It’s tough to say no to hanging out at a brewery in warm clear weather. Hopefully you are doing the same!
Nick’s Take
This new sour from Nauti Dog looked the part of a pink grapefruit juice that was carbonated. The hazy beer had a nice collar from the pour and it persisted for a few minutes before subsiding to just a light pink ring around the glass. There was no question that this would be juicy and tart.
The aromas from “Pink Lady” were not sharp or overbearing. There were nice subtleties of tart grapefruit and some sweet stone fruit. I know “crisp” isn’t a smell, but that impression was imparted upon me by the aromatic profile. Joe and I later discussed that this resembled a crisp apple.
I really enjoyed the mouthfeel in “Pink Lady,” for all its tart and crisp qualities. I experienced just a bit of pucker but that was met with equal amounts of carbonated crispness. After several drinks, I noted the dryness that was coming into play. That never deters me, but rather urges me to drink faster to quench my thirst.
The flavor continued to evolve throughout my tasting, and I found myself constantly adding notes to my review. Of course, the grapefruit/citrus taste was evident. The juicy quality of this sour brought forth notes of peach and apple. I think these flavors balanced well and didn’t leave the beer too tart. One of my last notes to make was a pick up of some spice, which I claimed as cinnamon – this was great with that crisp apple flavor I was getting.
Overall, this sour was quite easy to drink. The tartness was toned down enough to not leave your palate overwhelmed, and it left a pretty smooth drinker. Plus, the different flavors that work together made an exciting sour that was a contrast from some of the other sours I’ve had recently. Head down to Nauti Dog (and bring your pooch if you have one) so you can get “Pink Lady” for yourself!
Joe’s Take
“Pink Lady” fruited sour sat pretty in pink in my pint glass at the brewery. I can best describe the color as bubblegum haze, a whitish pink that was completely opaque. A bright white head bubbled up after pouring but it quickly died down.
The aroma of the beer reminded me of some soured peaches but in a good way. A light tartness and acidity was present which was followed by sweet peaches. No heavy hop or malt character was present on the nose but there was a touch of spice. The smell was quite appetizing and combined with the color made for an appealing beer.
Mouthfeel of “Pink Lady” was crisp and slightly drying. A light acidity played well with the medium body of the brew and cut the mild viscosity of the fruited sour. The combination of these characteristics led to an easy sipping beer.
Sweet, tart, and fruity are the words I would use to describe the flavor profile of the beer. The fruit came through as sweet apples and a hint of stone fruit like peaches and pears. The beer was relatively sweet and would be a hop haters best friend. However, the tart character of the beer helped balance the sweetness out, creating an easy drinking beer.
Nauti Dog has been coming out with some easy drinking, great tasting beers lately and this beer adds to that portfolio. If you get the chance, make your way out and give “Pink Lady” a try.
