Joe’s Take
We’re back at Nauti Dog and were here just in time to sample a few new selections they recently put on tap. One of those beers was “Nutty Butty,” an interesting peanut butter white stout. We initially had intended to try the hazy NEIPA, “Astro-Nautical Haze” but once we found out about “Nutty Butty” we knew that this was a style we wouldn’t come across often.
“Nutty Butty” was a hazy golden hue a little brighter than the namesake nut butter. It had a white foamy head that quickly settled into a thin ring around the glass. From a distance one may mistake it as a juicy IPA. However, this mix up is short-lived as its identity becomes incredibly apparent when you take a sniff. I have always enjoyed white stouts and blonde stouts as they trick you into thinking you are about to take a sip of a mild or hoppy beer. It’s always interesting to me how much your vision plays a role in your expectations of food/drink.
The aroma of the brew was unmistakably peanut focused. It had a slight sweetness and the aroma was instantly recognizable as peanut butter. There was a slight toastiness to the beer as well, bringing in a bit of that roasty malt character you tend to find in a stout.
The mouthfeel of the beer was buttery smooth but this sensation was broken up by bright pops of carbonation. This kept the beer feeling lighter despite its powerful flavor. I enjoyed the relatively light body of the beer and this, combined with the pleasant mouthfeel, made the beer easy to sip.
The taste of “Nutty Butty” was a peanut butter lover’s paradise. It featured heaps of earthy peanut, a well-balanced sweetness, and a slight roasty character. The flavor was not overpowering despite what you might think of when you hear peanut butter stout. As I sipped the beer, I also started to sense some earthy/spicy hops that imparted a slight bitterness. Overall, the flavor profile was well-balanced despite the powerful particles playing upon your palate (had to throw in some alliteration).
For a peanut butter stout, I would rate this beer as highly drinkable. The flavor profile was well-balanced even though it was flavor packed. The mouthfeel was smooth but still light and the low ABV of 4.8% makes this beer entirely sessionable (especially when paired with a jelly biscuit). I definitely will be having this beer again and I encourage you to get out and try it too!
Nick’s Take
Our latest visit to Nauti Dog was special, as we got to spend some time chatting with the owners (including an interview with the head brewer, Janis – coming to our Instagram soon!). We also got to try a couple new beers, including “Nutty Butty,” a white stout enhanced by peanut butter, which is today’s feature. The pub style glass in which this white stout was served allowed a good view of the hazy, pale goldenrod-colored beer. There was an attractive head of white foam that dissipated to just a faint ring after a minute or so. The looks alone almost assured it would be delicious.
As to be expected from a beer name with anything alluding to nuts, the aromas produced a nuttiness, which was akin to peanuts or peanut butter in this case. I also detected sweet white chocolate smells and a faint aroma of coffee bean that added some robustness to the overall sweet profile.
One thing about stouts that seems to be pretty consistent is that the mouthfeel tends to be quite smooth, lacking that crisp bite you often find in beer (after all, they are carbonated). However, “Nutty Butty” seemed to have the best of both worlds. I noted an initial burst upfront, but that carbonation mostly subsided and left a very smooth mouthfeel behind. It was on the lighter side and super palatable.
The flavors you can expect to find in “Nutty Butty” range from peanuts/peanut butter, chocolate (for me, I was tasting white chocolate), coffee, and perhaps some of the hops underneath all of that. I loved that this white stout’s flavors all tasted super authentic and were in harmony. The peanut butter flavor ranges from sweet to savory, and the coffee and cocoa/chocolate additions really match up well in terms of their intensity in the beer. You also still get the beer’s base flavors, too, with just a touch of hops sneaking through.
I could have several glasses of “Nutty Butty” and would love to bring in several pairing options to see how well they go with this white stout. Joe’s jelly biscuit idea is a great one, and I think some oatmeal raisin cookies would go nicely as well. Basically, sweet and savory treats should all work. I love the idea behind this beer and the execution was well-done. I’m looking forward to the new brews that Nauti Dog will have on tap when we make our next visit!
